French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
